It was pointed out by Chris that families come to the Park with their tents, chairs, tables and bar-b-ques and set up everywhere and anywhere. To have a defined area would bring this type of activity into one location which could encourage greater use of the park by families and also enable the activities to be more easily controlled. There are playgrounds near by, toilets and a caf, which the Friends consider makes it an ideal location. The idea was generally agreed by all as being an excellent potential addition to Beddington Park, providing families with somewhere to sit and have a bar-b-que safely and to use the related facilities in that locality including younger children being able to paddle in the river as at present. Mark pointed out that to make it a dog free zone would mean it would have to be fenced, which was generally agreed as not being suitable for this area, and would spoil the look of the wide open space. He also told us that the Lee Valley area had to close their bar-b-que facilities as fights broke out when too many people wanted to use the facilities, but it was hoped that the residents of Wallington would not be that way inclined. It was agreed we should go for the A framed table and benches combined, and Bill felt that the metal ones used by the caf would be ideal as they would not burn if visitors put their disposable grill on the table when alight and were very heavy to deter theft. We should have safe bar-b-ques on stone/concrete plinths and plenty of litter provision. Bill mentioned some bus shelter type constructions that he had seen with metal top benches for the public to put their disposable grills on and a metal bin at the end of the benches for them to dispose of residue safely, which seemed a very good idea to all of us. Bill will try to find out who produces them. We would have to look at the bye-laws which at present appear to prevent the lighting of fires. Mark said he was not in favour of the felled trees/logs to mark the boundaries as these may caused a problem with mowing. Dee responded by mentioning the previous idea of a line of trees to mark the proposed boundary which was agreed as preferable. Actions: Bill to find providers of A frame metal benches and bar-b-que facilities Dee to get prices for mature trees for boundary and apply for funding from Metropolitan Gardens for the trees. Mark to sort out the bye-law on the lighting of fires and to speak to the Police to see if they had any issues with this. Chris to produce a plan to show our thoughts and ideas for presentation at a future Beddington and Wallington Area Committee meeting Next meeting dates 5th December and 13th February. Friends to approach Viridor for possible funding of benches and bar-b-ques. Mark pointed out that to provide planting and benches in the Park did not actually require approval, but Jane McCoy felt that the Area Committee should be made aware of the plan and to give their consent to the changes at the Park. Chris outlined the Friends vision for the future of the Park including the provision of beaches for children where they naturally paddle in the river, to narrow the river to speed the flow with dredging around the islands and eventually dredging of the old boating lake. We are hoping to encourage boats back onto the lake and to give children valuable water craft and safety training. The group went on to discuss the Management Plans that are being written for the Grove, the Oaks, Cheam and Manor Parks and Beddington Park. These are required for Green Flag status. Beddington Parks Management Plan is due in 2008/9, and then possible Green Flag status too. Mark mentioned that Parks were in discussion with MenCap with regard to cycle training and providing a variety of bicycles to enabled disabled people to ride in the Park, which it was agreed was a wonderful idea. We also discussed the National Tree Planting week and the Rotary Club planting of trees on the west side of the park.
