It is suggested that this will save 25,000 per year. In reality the Council will be paying an external contractor to carry out a function that is already being done by an existing member of staff who will remain in post. It also means that unless the contractor is able to return your dog to you immediately at the time of collection the dog will be taken to Battersea Dogs Home at additional cost to the owner and distress to the dog. This will happen even if your dog has a collar and tag or is microchipped. As well as having to pay Batterseas charges you will also be invoiced by the Council for 150 Under the present system dogs are held until the end of the day before being transported to Battersea. This gives the owner more time to come forward to reclaim the dog directly for a lesser fee of 75, and minimizes the stress to the dog. If you find a dog the contractors current out of hours response time is 2 hours and sometimes longer. At present dogs are normally collected within about 20 minutes. The Council is also reliant on the Stray Dog Contractor providing correct details for dogs that have been collected, unfortunately in the 8 months that the out of hours contract has been running mistakes have occurred that have only come to light sometimes several months later. As an owner legally only has 7 days to find their lost dog, it is possible that a dog could be rehomed or destroyed I am writing to you as I believe that you will be concerned about the above proposal. Please help by sparing the time to write a letter opposing this proposal.
